2 Chronicles 16:9
For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show Himself strong in behalf of those whose hearts are blameless toward Him. You have done foolishly in this; therefore, from now on you shall have wars.
This verse felt really harsh when I first read it in my daily devotional. I became a little unsettled and thought to myself, “I was looking for a less heavy verse.”
Then I started to look and think a bit deeper.
I started to understand that God looks for those whose hearts are perfect and blameless toward Him. I started to relate more because I recently started saying this to my children. I would tell them to make the right decision and have a good heart. I would then try to bring up a biblical verse why I was asking them to act this way. Even though they were disobeying me and causing me stress, I still loved them so much.
When I first read this, I thought, “man, I need to be very very good to have God’s love”. Then, I finally started to search for what kind of “perfect” God was really looking for.
What kind of “perfect” am I looking for in my kids? It does not mean to “perform” perfectly; it means to have a heartfelt desire to do right and please God.
People who have perfect hearts truly love God, though they themselves may not be perfect.
They may still have things to deal with in the flesh. They may say things they should not say. They will make mistakes or lose their tempers. But when they do, they are quick to repent and make things right with God again. If they have offended someone, they will humble themselves and apologize.
If we have perfect hearts towards God, He counts us as perfect and works with us while that perfection becomes more and more real in our lives.
I am not a perfect person, but I do believe I can have a perfect heart toward God. It is so easy to complain. I know this from experience. I pray and hope God will lead me to help shape my children’s hearts in this way too.
This morning, He wanted to work on my heart a little bit I guess.
Even if we do not have the perfect performance – you can still love God with all of your heart. There are many people with the right hearts, and those are the ones God uses. So keep working on things you need to work on in your life. Show your children how you continue to peel back the layers and allow God to help you each and everyday and keep a perfect heart towards God.
