One thing I know for certain as a mama, upset tummies can be mild or they can be a total nightmare. Sometimes, just a little home remedy can do the trick and help heal our littles one relatively quickly. Either way, an instant remedy that can offer relief is totally necessary for every mom across the world!
Essential Oils for an Upset Tummy
The digestive system is obviously under stress when an upset tummy is concerned. There can be many different symptoms involved such as nausea, diarrhea, gas, cramps indigestion or even heart burn. It can be hard to communicate with a little one on how bad his tummy hurts, but as mom’s we naturally want to ease our children’s pain.
I love turing to essential oils because they are safe and extremely effective on upset tummies. They can be applied very easily too! My go -to oils are listed below.
Oils for Digestive Issues
Bloating: Digest Zen
- Ginger, peppermint, tarragon, fennel, caraway, coriander and anise each have specific attributes which add to the overall efficacy of this potent blend. I buy mine here.
Constipation: Lemon, peppermint, Digest Zen, ginger, fennel and orange.
Cramps: Digest Zen, basil, clary sage.
Gas: Lavender, ginger, peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary.
Heartburn: Lemon, peppermint, Digest Zen
Wild orange is one of my favorite oils to go to when there is a mild upset tummy in my home. The digestive and immune systems are the two body systems affected when using this oil. When using this oil, you can apply it topically (diluting some in coconut oil if you prefer) or you can diffuse in into the air. When using orange, it is important to avoid direct sunlight for up to 12 hours after using.
I also frequently use the on gaurd beadlets by dōTERRA to help boost the immune system and fight off any lingering infections. You can buy those here. I love these! I keep them with me in my diaper bag so I can give him one when he has been exposed to sick children or seems under the weather.
Keeping Oils on Hand
It is good to keep a few of these essential oils and blends on hand so you can use them right away. I also love the Modern Essentials book to help guide me on what to use and the proper dosage to use for children. Essential oils are very concentrated and strong, so educating yourself properly on what to use is very important!
Modern Medicine vs Natural Remedies
There are many options to choose from as mothers when we are in search of ways to heal our children. I have found a new peace when using natural remedies such as oils, herbs and other natural goodies to help the body heal on its own. A lot of if not all medications administered to our children are treating the symptoms and not the root cause. In the situation of an upset tummy, it could be viral or bacterial, maybe even fungal.
The best news yet? Essential oils target all of those. Viral infections. Bacterial infections. Yes, even fungal. They help repair our cells…naturally! AND THEY ARE SAFE! I am half terrified to give my children any medication because of the known side effects. Most of the time, we do not even know all of the side effects because they are kept from us. There is nothing more natural than nature. Essential oils are God’s gift of medicine to us!
Teas for the Tummy
Teas can be a great way to help ease an upset tummy and keep everyone hydrated. Here are some herbs to keep on hand. I like to buy each one in a loose leaf and then combine them when needed. I buy mine here.
They are organic – a must when giving them to children when you are trying to promote healing to the gut. Tea’s are very high in sprayed chemicals, so going organic will ensure it’s free of them. Simply mix 1 tsp of each herb and brew. Add lots of raw honey which is thriving with real live enzymes, also good for the tummy!
